Between Shells

Twelve weeks of company for people who’ve outgrown the old shell and haven’t built the new one yet, and something to make while you cross.

You might be between shells if…

  • You know what you care about. Finding your thread isn’t the question any more.
  • Something is trying to come into the world through you, and it hasn’t found its form.
  • You’ve been circling it for a while, mostly on your own or at the edge of an institution.
  • You need company and some dates on the calendar more than you need another course.

Probably not for you if you’re still looking for your thread, you want a launch plan, or you need therapy.

You bring one thing

The thing you’re carrying. A book or a chapter of one. A practice or method. An offer you keep not making. A body of ideas. An organisation finding its shape. A talk you’ve been avoiding.

It meets someone

By the end, your thing goes out into the world in whatever form fits it: a reading, a first room you host, an offer people can find, a talk. And you’re a little more at home in the new shell.

The season

12 weeks · 6–8 people · following my groksmithing method

  1. Week 0

    Threshold conversation

Just us. We name your thing and agree what this season is for.

  2. Weeks 1–3

    Name the change

What shell are you leaving, and what was it protecting?

  3. Weeks 4–6

    Clarify the relationship

Between you and your thing, and between your thing and the people it’s for.

  4. Weeks 7–10

    Make the thing

You make it, and the circle reads and listens to it first.

  5. Weeks 11–12

    The crossing

It goes out to meet someone, and you go somewhere you haven’t been yet, on purpose.

  • 6 fortnightly circles · 2 hrs
  • Three 1:1s with me
  • Prompts between circles
  • Optional weekly studio hour

What’s actually happening in the room

There isn’t much curriculum. In each circle people bring where their thing is up to, the group pays real attention, and I name what I’m noticing. One small exercise unsticks the next step, and you leave with something to make before we meet again.

I’m not teaching you how to do it. I’m keeping you company while you do it, so you don’t put it down again.

You leave with

  • Your thing, made and shared with someone
  • A clearer sense of who you are now
  • Six or so people who saw you do it
  • An optional place to keep going: the Practice Circle

Who I am and what I do

I founded Grokkist, a learning community for curious, caring people who don’t fit the scripts they were handed. Privately I think of myself as a kind of magician. To the world I say threshold guide, which is close enough to be true.

For years I’ve run Find Your Red Thread cohorts and Red Thread Talks, and I write the Unforgetting sequence. Between Shells is where that work goes next: less finding the thread, more making something with it.

How to join

Places are small and by conversation. Book a time below, or write to me with a few lines about the thing you’re bringing, and we’ll start with the threshold conversation. If it isn’t the right season for you, I’ll say so, and point you somewhere better.

You’re not lost. You’re between shells.
