A free workshop for your community or team · 90 minutes · online or in the room
The work that brings you alive hasn’t learned to pay you, yet
For people with real gifts and no wish to sell their soul to make a living from them. Not more effort, not a personal brand. Legibility.

For communities and teams
There’s work that brings people alive: the thing they do with a fluency they can’t fully account for. People feel it when they’re near it. The trouble isn’t believing in the work. It’s that a living hasn’t formed around it, and the usual advice (find your niche, build a brand, sell, sell, sell) feels like it would cost the very thing that makes the work worth doing.
If your community or team is full of people like that, changemakers, makers, facilitators, carers, the multiply curious, this is a session I’ll run for them, free.
The idea underneath
- It isn’t effort, talent, care or confidence. Most people in the room are already running flat out.
- What’s missing is legibility: whether what you do can be read, by you, by your peers, and by the world that might pay for it.
- Legibility comes in stages, in order. Trying to be paid from a stage you haven’t reached feels like a worth problem. It’s a sequencing problem.
- Money isn’t the problem, extraction is. We put money back in the room, on non-extractive terms.
How the 90 minutes go
a talk with plenty of room in it, a conversation in pairs, and time for questions
Arrive
Too many tennis balls
Where people are right now, with a number in the chat.
The machine
Nothing is missing
The Incredible Machine, and why the pieces just need a different order.
Three stages
Legible to yourself, peers, world
What each looks like, how each goes wrong, and how to tell which you’re at.
In pairs
What do you actually do?
No job titles. What’s that about? What’s hard to explain about it?
Money
Which kind are you aiming at?
Four kinds of money, and closing the gap between your stage and your expectations.
What your people leave with
- A name for what’s been going wrong, that isn’t “there’s something wrong with me”
- A sense of which stage they’re at, and which they’ve been trying to be paid from
- Ten minutes of saying the true version of their work out loud, to someone who leaned in
- The free Unforgetting piece and sheet, to keep going on their own
Why free?
Because it’s how people find my work, and I would rather they found it by being in a good room than by being sold to. I’ll mention where people can go next, the Legibility Lab and Between Shells, once, at the end. That’s the whole pitch.
If your organisation can pay a fee, wonderful. If it can’t, it makes no difference to whether I come.
Where it’s been
First run in July 2026 for the Association of Sustainability Practitioners. There’s a recording on the ASP site.
“I said to someone, ‘I teach people how to play.’ And they went, ‘Oh, yeah, I like it.’”
Trudi Boatwright, on the moment her work became legible. We watch it in the session.
“It’s actually the fundamental stuff. This is like the inner work that people haven’t even thought they needed to do.”
Gwyn Jones, Association of Sustainability Practitioners, after the first runBring it to your people
Tell me a little about your people and what they’re wrestling with. I’ll suggest a format (online works well; in person if I’m nearby) and a couple of dates.
Also on offer: From generalist to grokkist, for communities of multi-passionate people who have spent their lives being told to pick one thing. Ask about it in the same note.
