Ecosophy = "wisdom of the home" (Greek, oikos + Sophia)

Join us for our online ecosophy course, designed to guide you through these tumultuous times of environmental and societal change.

Everyone has a philosophy, whether they know it or not.

This course invites you to explore how your personal philosophy—your ecosophy—interacts with the larger ecological and social shifts, and discover how to articulate and act upon your values with clarity and purpose.

Together we’ll take a tour through philosophical ideas and thinkers both ancient and modern.

Through thoughtful dialogue and collaborative learning, we’ll analyze, discuss, and apply ideas that bridge your internal beliefs with external actions, fostering a meaningful connection to the nested homes we inhabit—from the personal to the planetary.

Whether you're seeking to understand your role in an ecological revolution or simply aiming to align your actions with your deeper values, this journey will equip you to act and live with intention and insight.

What others are saying

A balm for these troubled times

Brittany Cole Houston

Nathan’s Ecosophy course is a balm for these troubled times, truly. It helped remind me that education doesn’t have to be homogenized and dull—that it can be simultaneously dynamic, playful, silly, and substantive.

There is a refreshing liberation when we reclaim how we choose to study what we love, and this course gave me that hope again. It also helped me define my animist and deep ecology roots in more detail, and I met so many new friends there.

There is a little something for everyone, whether you’re completely disillusioned by education or you’re at your cerebral and intellectual zenith. Instead of a classroom, there is simply a circle of like-minded peers who care about things as much as you do.

Instead of a teacher, there is a philosophical word wizard sharing his treasure box of knowledge nuggets he’s collected on his journey. It was weird, wonderful, enjoyable, surprisingly comforting, and intellectually satiating. May everyone we know get to experience the eccentric and enchanting aspects of Nathan and his Ecosophy course!

Is this for me?

The Ecosophy Course offers something for everyone, whether you're seeking inspiration, knowledge, or a fun time. We welcome curious, non-traditional and neurodivergent learners who want to make sense of the ideas swirling around in their heads, gain confidence in how to move forward, or unlock a new level of understanding.

Our playful approach to serious engagement with philosophy and ecological action will provide you with an enriching and thought-provoking experience.

The course is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of your background or experience. No pre-existing knowledge is necessary; just come as you are. Previous alumni have included people with an interest in ecological action but no experience with the study of philosophy, people with an interest in philosophy but no experience of ecological activism, people familiar with neither philosophy nor ecological activism, and people familiar with both.

All you need to bring is your attention, digital presence, and a smile.

What to expect

Throughout the course, we'll be covering a range of environmental topics, from the ideal city state to the concept of eco-socialism, and the role of philosophy in policy-making. We'll be looking at these issues through the lens of philosophy, providing you with practical tools and strategies for taking action towards a more sustainable future.

We'll encourage you to engage in discussions and share your perspectives on the topics covered, as well as collaborate with each other in creating an action plan to address ecological issues.

Is it really about taking action or is it just talking about ideas?

We're not here for book club. We are serious about addressing the ecological crisis by bridging the gap between philosophy and action, and exploring tangible ways to make a difference in the world.

We know we want to ‘save the Earth’ — but what are the concepts underlying our environmental thinking? What is ‘Nature’? What is ‘Ecology’?

More than just philosophy to think about, it's an experience that manifests itself in a form of action you can take, that can save some small part of your world.

Along the way, we'll cultivate a sense of community while gaining practical tools and strategies for taking action towards a more sustainable future.

The course culminates in a final project where we push ourselves to generate an abstract statement of our Values, and concretely join them to our concrete plans of Action.

We've even created an interactive database of Ecosophy projects created by participants of the course.
